    Environmental impact assessment for development of a new power house at B. Hithaadhoo

    The proposed project aims to provide sustainable electricity supply for B. Hithaadhoo by the development of a new powerhouse. The project is essentially required because the existing powerhouse is not in accordance with current standards and is in the middle of the residential area. The project involves the construction of a new powerhouse away from the residential area and the transfer of existing generators to new powerhouse. The relocation of powerhouse is essential as the noise and smoke disturbance from the generators to the community is high. However with the development of new powerhouse it is expected that the noise and smoke disturbance will be reduced greatly. The negative impacts during the construction will be loss of vegetation and risk of groundwater contamination. During operation also there is risk of groundwater contamination. However with proper daily maintenance and following proper chemical handling procedures the risks can be minimized. The positive impacts from the project will be very high as Fenaka Corporation would be able to provide electricity sustainably to Hithaadhoo with negligible disturbance to community.

    Environmental impact assessment for development of a new power house at G.Dh. Thinadhoo

    The proposed project aims to provide sustainable electricity supply for G.Dh Thinadhoo by the development of a new powerhouse within the existing FENAKA premises. The project is essentially required because the existing powerhouse was burned down to the extent it can no longer be used due to an accidental fire. The new powerhouse will be constructed using pre-fabricated sheets and blocks. The generators in the temporary facility will be transferred to the new powerhouse and connected to the grid. The new powerhouse is essential as the noise and smoke disturbance from the generators is high. However with the development of new powerhouse it is expected that the noise and smoke disturbance will be reduced greatly. The negative impacts during the construction will be loss of vegetation and risk of groundwater contamination. During operation also there is risk of groundwater contamination. However with proper daily maintenance and following proper chemical handling procedures the risks can be minimized. The positive impacts from the project will be very high as Fenaka Corporation would be able to provide electricity sustainably to Thinadhoo.

    Environmental impact assessment for poultry farm development at M. Maahura

    This report discusses the findings of an environmental impact study for the proposed poultry farming project at M.Maahura. Maldives is a country heavily dependent on the import of food for the daily consumption. Government has taken several measures to introduce numerous technologies in food production. Therefore, as such a step, island of Maahuraa was provided to practice poultry farming. As of now there are no infrastructures on Maahura, except for a well and a small hut made of roofing sheets. The proponent will build all the required project facilities on the island. This would include the infrastructure needed for the poultry production and the utility services for the facility. The water is proposed to be provided by the means of a desalination plant. The sewer is proposed to be collected to a discharge pump station via a gravity line. The sewerage will be discharged beyond the reefs edge as per the respective technical specifications. Two number of 300 KW and one number of 50KW generator sets would be utilized to cater for the electricity needs. While a waste storage area will be developed, the waste is planned to be routinely shipped to the nearest waste management facility. Alternatives have been identified in the project document, whereby the alternatives of combining the outfall for brine and waste water is deemed feasible as the exiting lagoon is too shallow to diffuse the concentrate brine discharge effectively. The most significant impact from the proposed project would be temporary deterioration of local freshwater quality and seawater quality at the disposal site; however, these are low magnitude impacts. There are some significant environmental impacts identified for the proposed project, however these can be minimized by adhering to the respective regulations and adopting the necessary mitigation measures. A monitoring program has been proposed for the project to assess and examine changes to the environment, if any in the long run.

    Environmental impact assessment for submarine platform development

    The proposed project aims to build a small docking bay for the existing submarine services in a lagoon of the Male’ Atoll. The need for the project raised due to ongoing bridge project where it required some changes to the passage of vessels in North Male Atoll. The passage between Male and Villimale where the submarine is currently docked has been declared as free anchorage passage area and therefore the submarine operations needs to be shifted elsewhere. The proposed project include to build one resting pavilion and two docking areas on the lagoon that can be used in either of the monsoon. The main foreseen negative impacts are oil spills, waste generation, coral mortality which are mostly localized. The main positive impact is the prevention of job loss of employees that work for the submarine operations and the preservation of a one-of-a kind tourism venture in the Maldives. It is advised to carry on with the project with proper mitigation measures such as regular maintenance of machinery, following chemical handling procedures, adhering strictly to existing regulations and using silt screens to prevent spread of turbidity plumes. The alternatives of the project have also been studied such as the no project option, change of location, change of design and change of technology usage. However, it was seen that the best options within the comparisons were to proceed with the project as proposed.

    Environmental impact assessment for the development of a new power house at G.Dh. Thinadhoo

    1. The purpose of this EIA is to critically analyse and assess the potential environmental impacts associated with the development of new powerhouse at G.DH Thinadhoo and expose the solutions and preferred alternatives as well as mitigation measures to minimize any negative impacts whilst trying to derive the maximum positive impacts from the project. 2. The powerhouse in Thinadhoo was recently burned down by an accidental fire. The powerhouse was burned to the extent that the building can no longer be used. The fire has greatly reduced the strength of the walls and concrete beams of the building, considering the health and safety of the staff that work in the powerhouse it is not advisable to repair the building and continue operations. Therefore, a new powerhouse is proposed to be developed in Thinadhoo. 3. In this powerhouse development project, a new powerhouse is proposed to be constructed within the FENAKA premise. The powerhouse will be constructed from pre-fabricated sheets and blocks. The project will also involve the construction of admin building, fuel storages and the transfer of generators from the existing temporary powerhouse to the new powerhouse. The generator beds will be rolled over metal rollers to the new powerhouse. All the components of the powerhouse will be constructed according to BS standards complying to both MEA and EPA regulations. 4. Thinadhoo is located on the western edge of Huvadhoo Atoll. Thinadhoo is the most densely populated island in G.DH atoll. According to census 2014 the total population of Thinadhoo is 5268. 5. A full baseline of air quality, water quality and noise level was established. It was found that the water at the powerhouse location had very high conductivity which may be due to its close proximity to the coast. Noise level within the vicinity of the temporary generators is very high, it was concluded that the noise level is high because the generators were not inside a sound attenuated powerhouse. Air quality measurements at the existing temporary powerhouse and proposed powerhouse revealed that only air pollutant Nitrogen dioxide was found at 2 ppm concentration near the exhaust chimney of the existing temporary powerhouse.The construction works of new powerhouse presented in this report are not expected to adversely impact the environment if the mitigation measures mentioned in the report are followed. The most important mitigation measures are to do daily maintenance of machinery, following chemical handling procedures, waste segregation and storage in closed labelled containers until disposal to Thilafushi and most importantly following the fuel handling plan 7. It is expected that the newly established powerhouse will ensure reliable electricity services to Thinadhoo. And also will greatly reduce any smoke and noise disturbance to the community and the environment. 8. The major potential negative impact for this project is groundwater contamination from chemical spills and oil spills during fuel handling. Therefore, handling of fuel or other chemical substances has to be done according to the fuel handling plan. The major potential positive impact from the project is the reliable supply of electricity services to Thinadhoo. 9. Monitoring is essential to ensure that environmental thresholds are not exceeded and mitigation measures proposed are working. Water quality and air quality monitoring will be done according to the monitoring schedule. 10. The no project scenario will mean that the new powerhouse will not be developed in Thinadhoo and would lead to reduced reliability of electricity services to Thinadhoo. One alternative location, west side of island along with the proposed project location was analysed. It was found that the proposed project location is the preferred alternative based on socioeconomic and environmental factors.
