The Islamic wave that swept in with the rising Arab trade, washed over the Maldives. Forms of music and dance reveal cultural contact with other Indian Oceanic peoples. African migrants have introduced a form of music which has become popular in the Maldives. The type of construction found in these mosques called “coral stone carpentry” is no longer possible and the mosques that survive today are the last of its kind that needs protection and appreciation for the sake of future generations. This book is an introduction to coral stone mosques with photos of selected mosques in their present state and illustrations of them in their former glorious state.
