Temporal Variation of Indoor (a residential space) and Outdoor PM 2.5 in Male’, Maldives
(The Maldives National Journal of Research, 2023) Noora Khaleel, Md Firoz Khan and Siti Jariani Mohd Jani; ނޫރާ ޚަލީލް، މޑ ފީރޯޒް ޚާން އަދި ސިތި ޖަރިއާނީ މޮހޮދް ޖާނީ
This study aims to assess the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) inside a one-room apartment of about 240 square feet in the Henveiru district in Male', Maldives. Concentrations of Particulate Matter (PM 2.5), one of the most detrimental air pollutants, were measured every 15 minutes from 10-09-2021 to 18-12-2021 using low-cost PM BlueSky sensors inside the building (indoor) and simultaneously outdoor, about 300m away from the indoor sensor. The BlueSky monitors were co-located and harmonized before starting the monitoring. The mean concentrations observed indoor and outdoor for 93 days were 10.1±13.1 µg/m 3 and 6.5±4.9 µg/m 3 , respectively. Both results surpass the annual average of 5 µg/m3 guideline of World Health Organization (WHO). The number of days that surpassed the 24-hour WHO limit was 9 for indoor and 7 for outdoors. The diurnal pattern of PM 2.5 shows a drastic accumulation of the pollutant inside the building when the only available ventilation (the window) was closed, which was identified at night and also during the daytime. The recorded PM 2.5 levels also aligned with household activities like cooking, cleaning, and dusting. There was a significant moderate correlation (r= 0.48) between outdoor and indoor PM 2.5. The I/O ratio was 1.95±3.01 indicating the presence of more indoor sources. This study serves as a preliminary assessment of indoor air quality in Male', Maldives. Based on its findings, efforts should be directed towards ensuring proper ventilation in residential spaces and continuously monitoring air quality in more location for longer periods to ensure healthy IAQ.

    Forest fires in Cyprus
(Research Development Office, The Maldives National University, 2023-12) Georgiou, Kyriakos E.; ކައިރިއަކޮސް އީ. ޖޯރޖިއު
According to a recent report by OECD (2023) the frequency and severity of forest fires and wildfires as well as the duration of the fire season, are increasing in many regions of the world. Wildfires, forest fires for the most part, in recent years have been severely affecting the Mediterranean region during the summer period from June to August, having severe and direct effect on the environment, local economies, livelihoods and societies. A good example of this Cyprus an island state in the north east of the region. The major issues that are responsible for this is climate change, the poor management of forests and the surrounding areas and socioeconomic factors that relate to the abandonment of the rural areas. All these factors lead to the increase of the available fuel.

Parent-child attachment and romantic relationship : is there a relationship between parent-child attachment and young adults’ romantic relationships?
(Research Development Office, The Maldives National University, 2023) Shanoora, Aishath; Halimatusaadiah, Hanina; Abdullah, Haslinda Binti; Khir, Azlina Mohd; އައިޝަތު ޝަނޫރާ; ހަނީނާ ހަލީމަތުސާދިއްޔާ; ހަސްލިންދާ ބިންތި އަބްދުﷲ; އަޒްލިނާ މޮހްދު ޚިރު
Many researchers have found that the key to future adaptations or maladaptations of children is the attachment they form with their parents (Davies & Sturge-Apple, 2007; Marvin & Britner, 2008). Early research on attachment has highlighted the impact of parent-child attachment continuing across life (Bowlby, 1982). Recent research has shown that insecure attachment during childhood impacts young adults’ attachment with their parents and in turn, impacts different aspects of their lives. However, no or limited studies have explored the direct relationship between attachment styles and young adults’ romantic relationships among Maldivian young adults. This study aimed to fill this gap by assessing the relationship between young adult’s parent child attachment, and the quality of romantic relationships among young adults in Higher Education Institutions in the Maldives. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 463 students aged 18 to 28 in higher education institutions in the Maldives. The data were collected using the Perceived Relationship Quality Scale by Fletcher et al. (2000) and the Attachment to Parent/Caregiver Inventory by Hu (2009). The data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and PLS SEM software. The results showed high levels of avoidant attachment with both mother and father among the participants, which was negatively associated with their current romantic relationship quality. In addition, it also showed an association between mother child anxious attachment, father-child anxious attachment, and the romantic relationship quality of young adults. Hence, a direct connection between insecure attachment styles (avoidant attachment and anxious attachment) and low levels of relationship quality was established.
