Designing a GIS to meet real needs in the maldives
(ASPRS the Imaging and Geospatial Information Society, 2010-04-26) Mohamed Shafee; Dr. Kevin Lim; Dr. Robert Ryerson; Mr. Ihsan Sadiq; Ahmed Rasheed
The Government of the Republic of Maldives has received financing from the International Development Association (IDA) toward the cost of the Maldives Environmental Management Project, part of which was to develop a National Geographic Information System (NGIS) Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan. The development objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity for environmental management in the Maldives, by addressing some of the human resource constraints and informational impediments to improved environmental management. This paper presents the approaches used to overcome the many hurdles that were faced to develop the Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan. While the many challenges of designing an enterprise GIS to meet the real needs of small-island nations have been reviewed in previous papers, this project faced additional issues. To the challenges of dealing with national as well as local issues and operating with limited budgets, the situation in the Maldives was further complicated by a general lack of expertise in GIS, limited education in the field, virtually no existing system capability in the field, and a user community that generally lacked practical experience. This paper describes how all of these countervailing forces were seamlessly managed by the team so that the solution was made by and for the citizens of the Maldives. The description of the approaches used to develop the solution forms a useful guide to the development of a Spatial Data Infrastructure in the development context.

In March 2010, the Government of Maldives mandated La Compagnie Benjamin de Rothschild and BeCitizen, a Paris (France)-based strategic environmental consultancy to take forward the country’s pledge to become carbon neutral by 2020. Between July and October 2010, BeCitizen carried out the first step of this work, a Carbon Audit which covered the Maldives’ 2009 Greenhouse Gas Emissions, projections for 2020 and priority areas to be addressed in order to reach carbon neutrality.

FIDH conducted a fact-finding mission in the Maldives from 30th July to 2nd August 2012. The team met with a wide range of stakeholders from the civil society including victims of political violence, ministries, independent institutions, United Nations, and members of the opposition. FIDH calls on the international community to immediately engage all relevant stakeholders to prevent further deterioration of the human rights situation as well as to closely monitor the situation, especially in the prospect of the release of CoNI's report, and to actively act to support a return to the reform agenda.

    Nutrition for you
    (School health and safety section , ސްކޫލް ހެލްތް އެންޑް ސޭފްޓީ ސެކްޝަން, 2010) Collins, Emma; ކޮލިންސް، އެމާ
Nutrition is important for our existence, why it is important is not always self-explanatory. Good nutrition is important for growth and development of the body and the brain. Nutrition is the power source that enables the body to function properly and keep its healthy. Nutrition is important for children as their bodies are in the growing and developing stage. Children who do not take enough food, or take non-nutritious food, have poor physical and mental development compared to children who take nutritious food. Following a series of School Health Assessments conducted in Male’ in September 2002 it was clear that one of the primary gaps in educating children was lack of resources and knowledge among School Health Assistants and Teachers. Many of the staff who interviewed in the assessments procedure responded that they need additional resources and information. Specifically, an information guide for School Health Assistants, Teachers, Parents and also Students would be of help. This guide, as a result, is targeted towards those who work with and have a direct impact in the lives of children and their education. The guide is designed in a way that can be facilitated by health Personals across the Maldives and those working to expand and promote health within the country. It is hoped that this guide will prove a useful resource for all those who read and use it, providing knowledge and encouragement to make a difference in the community within which they work.
