The main objective of the survey is to estimate the travel expenditure, which is one of the components of the current account of the Balance of Payments statistics. The MTA survey is an important tool used to identify and analyse the travel patterns of Maldivians by purpose of travel, frequently visited destinations, and expenditure patterns. The report mainly focuses on the purpose of travel, destination, and expenditure of Maldivian travellers. The MTA survey is conducted primarily to aid in estimating travel expenditure of the Maldivians, which is one of the main components of the current account of the Balance of Payments (BOP) statistics. In the current format, the MTA survey has been conducted once every year since 2011. The main reason for including a comparison of the data from previous years is to depict how travel and spending patterns have changed in recent times.
