Environmental impact assessment : for proposed deepening of entrance channel for : the proposed re-development on Halaveli, North Ari Atoll, Maldives

Abstract

This Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report has been prepared in order to meet the requirements of Clause 5 of the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act of the Maldives to assess the impacts of deepening of existing entrance channel and associated beach nourishment on Halaveli Tourist Resort, North Ari Atoll, Maldives. This report forms part of a full EIA report that has been submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water for the proposed redevelopment of Halaveli Tourist Resort. This report will identify the potential impacts (both positive and negative) of proposed entrance channel deepening and associated beach replenishment works. The report will look at the justifications given by the Proponent for undertaking the proposed project components. Alternatives to proposed components or activities in terms of location, design and environmental considerations would be suggested. A mitigation plan and monitoring programme before, during and after the works would also be suggested. This would ensure that the proposed activities are undertaken with caution and appropriative care so as to protect and preserve the natural environment of the island. The impact assessments provided in this report are based on some of the information given in the EIA report undertaken by Fathimath Renee Abdul Sattar in 2005 for the reconstruction, site investigations in May 2006 and professional experience and judgement.
