Citation: | Land and Marine Environmental Resource Group. (2010). Environmental impact assessment report : addendum 1 : redevelopment of Fun Island resort, south Male atoll, Maldives. Male’: Land and Marine Environmental Resource Group. |
Abstract: | This report discusses the findings of the addendum to the environmental impact study
undertaken by Land and Marine Environmental Resources Group Pvt Ltd Contracted by Villa
Shipping and Trading Company Pvt Ltd for the proposed new development of Fun Island
The proposed changes to the redevelopment concept for Fun Island that has been submitted
and approved are;
• Increase in the number of rooms from 89 to 160
• Changes to the number of rooms on land
• Changes to the number of room and other amenities on over water structures
• Changes to the design and location of the arrival jetty
With these changes the total built-up area for the proposed developments has increased
from 17.5 to 19%. This is within the maximum allowable limit (20%) for built-up area from
the total land area registered under the lease agreement between the lease holder and
Ministry of tourism.
Fun Island Resort (Bodufinolhu) is located on the south eastern corner of South Male Atoll.
The reef on which Fun Island exist is an atoll rim reef which also houses six other islands
(Maadhoo Finolhu, Kuda Finolhu, Olhuveli, Oligandu Finolhu, Ehuruh Huraa and Rihiveli).
Olhuveli (adjacent to Fun Island on the southern side) and Rihiveli are tourist resorts hotels.
This reef system has a length of about 16 km with an approximate width of about 1 to 1.5
km. The reef system has a relatively shallow reef flat that has an average depth of
approximately -0.5 m (MSL). The atoll-ward slope of this reef system has a sandy slope
scattered with coral habitats and there is no deep lagoon within this reef system, which is a
common feature found on most peripheral reefs of Maldives. The total area of the reef
complex is approximately 19km2
.
No significant environmental impacts have been identified that would result from the
proposed components assessed in this addendum. The general impact on the environment
from the project will be due to resuspension of fine sediment in the water column and on
the benthic communities due to excavation works related to the construction of over water
structures. This impact could not be totally avoided but minimized through the mitigation
measures outlined in the report. Additional impacts are likely to come from construction of
building on land. However these impacts on terrestrial are also judged as insignificant dueto the presence of low natural and mature vegetation cover. This low level of vegetation
cover is because of large area of reclamation at the periphery of the island that was carried
out several years ago. Most of the land based structure would be constructed either on
reclaimed areas where there is little vegetation or at areas where there are buildings.
Most of the environmental impacts related to the redevelopment works have already been
covered in the EIA report. This addendum therefore addresses the specific components as
changes to the proposed redevelopment concept. These changes although significant from
construction point of view their impacts to the surrounding habitats are similar in their
magnitude.
Therefore the impact mitigation measures and associated monitoring program given in this
addendum would minimize those impacts when followed. |
