މިނިސްޓްރީ އޮފް ހެލްތް، ރިޕަބްލިކް އޮފް މޯލްޑިވްސްThe Maldives Health Research Bulletin is an annual publication by the Ministry of Health that promotes health research in the Maldives. The main objectives of publishing this bulletin include: (1) providing a common platform for students, researchers, and other stakeholders to gain easy access to health research materials relevant to the Maldivian context, (2) providing technical support to students and researchers by providing information related to existing and ongoing research as well as highlighting health research priority areas, and (3) ensuring research is conducted in line with national health research priority areas in accordance with Maldivian legislation and international standards. The composition of the eighth volume of the Maldives Health Research Bulletin includes 10 abstracts of completed research, a list of newly approved and ongoing research projects, an overview of the National Health Research Council, and the updated research approval process followed by the National Health Research Council starting in 2022. Additionally, this volume also lists the Health Research Priority Areas for 2022-2025. BookItem Maldives healthcare quality standards(Quality Assurance and Regulation Division, Ministry of Health, 2022) Quality Assurance and Regulation DivisionThe government has two objectives in setting these Healthcare Quality standards- firstly to ensure the service guarantees that it has made are honoured and secondly, to ensure that there is a conscious effort to address the quality dimension, so as to ensure that services provided are not only effective but also safe, comfortable and are rendered with dignity. Also the government recognises that a commitment to quality requires an approach of continuous improvement, where provision of quality services becomes part of the work culture. The Ministry of Health endeavors to ensure that the community accessing a facility is assured for availability of Services, which meets predefined quality bench-marks. The Quality Assurance Standards along measurable elements for each level of health facility are being published to help in measuring Quality of care. We believe in the words of James H Harrington that ’If you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it. If you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it.” It also needs to be remembered that that end-objectives of implementing Quality of Healthcare (QoC) at health facilities is not achieved by the assessment merely, if no action gets taken for closure of the gaps, which are found on assessment. I would urge all officials of Ministry of Health, Hospitals and Health Centers to continuously review the performance of health facilities, and take required steps for improving it. I wish to acknowledge support of WHO Country Office in formulation and development of these Quality Standards, a standard that also meets the international norms in measuring quality of healthcare. According to the chain whose synthesis is impaired, the thalassaemia is called α-, β-, γ-, δ -, δβ-, or εγδβ-thalassaemias. Thalassaemia comes under the broad spectrum of genetic blood disorders known as haemoglobinopathies. Clinical picture of haemoglobinopathies can vary from patients who require occasional blood transfusions (such as HbE-Beta thalassaemia) to patients who require regular lifelong blood transfusions (such as Beta thalassaemia major). Thalassemia is very common in Maldives. Any child present with severe anaemia should be investigated for both thalassemia and iron deficiency anaemia. Genetic basis of thalassaemia Most thalassaemia is inherited as autosomal recessive traits. The Figure 1 below gives the risk categorization of affected children from different partner matches.
